Botitas para bebé: cómo elegirlas y cuándo usarlas

Baby booties: how to choose them and when to use them

Boots are those shoes that you fall in love with immediately: they look cute, keep ankles warm, and add a special touch to any outfit. But before buying them, it's worth knowing at what stage they work best, what features to look for, and how to prevent your little one from overheating or feeling uncomfortable.

When are boots a good idea?

Boots are an excellent option when your baby is already walking or about to start, as well as for photos, outings, and cool days. By covering the ankle, they provide a feeling of warmth and offer a bit more support for the foot. That said, in very hot weather, it’s best to choose carefully or save them for short periods.

What features a good boot should have

  • Flexible sole. Even if the boot is taller, the sole should bend easily at the toes.
  • Lightweight. A heavy boot is tiring and makes walking difficult.
  • Comfortable collar. Better if it’s padded and doesn't rub against the ankle.
  • Firm fit at the heel. It shouldn't slip off or move while walking.
  • Easy closure. Laces, velcro, or a side zipper: choose whichever you find most practical. Here is a comparison: velcro, laces, or buckle.
  • Sufficient room in the toe box. Between half a centimeter and a centimeter, so the toes can move.

Sizing for boots: watch out for sock thickness

Since boots are often worn with thicker socks, it’s best to measure the foot while wearing the type of sock they will use. If you're right between two sizes, choose the larger one, without going too big. Check our Size Guide to measure correctly.

How to dress your baby in boots

  • With pants or leggings: the most practical and comfortable combination.
  • With a dress or skirt: perfect with knee-highs or tights for a cute look.
  • With overalls or a romper: a classic for cool days.
  • For photos: patent leather or detailed boots look great in sessions.

What to avoid

  • Very rigid boots that limit foot movement.
  • Letting them wear them all day in hot weather. Check that their feet aren't sweaty or red.
  • Sizes that are too big "to make them last." They slip off and cause tripping.
  • Inheriting boots already deformed from someone else's use.

Care for boots

Like any footwear, boots last longer with a little care: clean them after use, let them air dry in the shade, and store them in a cool place. If they are patent leather, you have a complete guide at how to clean and care for baby patent leather shoes.

How many pairs do they need?

One pair of boots for cool days or outings is usually enough. If you’re interested in putting together a complete kit, check out how many pairs of shoes a baby needs.
