How many pairs of shoes does a baby need?

Between gifts, sales, and the desire for your baby to look adorable, it is very easy to end up with a closet full of little shoes… that will only fit for a few weeks. If you are wondering how many pairs a baby really needs, this guide will help you shop wisely (and without breaking your budget).
Rule number one: feet grow fast
During the first few years, babies' feet grow at a very rapid pace. That is why a pair that fits perfectly today might be tight in just a few months. This is why it is not advisable to buy too many pairs of the same size: they probably won't have time to wear them all.
While they are not yet walking, they need very few
Before they start walking, your baby spends most of their time barefoot or wearing socks at home. In this stage, 1 or 2 pairs of soft, flexible shoes for outings, parties, and photos is enough.
When they are walking: a basic kit
When they start exploring, these three pairs cover almost any situation:
- A pair for daily use. Comfortable, lightweight, and easy to put on. This is the one they will wear the most, so prioritize comfort and a good fit.
- A pair for special occasions. For christenings, birthdays, parties, and photos. Here you can choose the one you fall in love with most: patent leather, bows, flowers, or eye-catching details.
- A pair for cold days or more rugged use. A little boot or a more enclosed shoe, depending on the climate in your area.
Is it worth having an extra pair?
A fourth pair can serve as a backup if the daily pair gets dirty, wet, or needs a break. Alternating shoes also helps them dry out properly between uses and last longer.
When it is better to buy less
- If your baby is in a stage of rapid growth.
- If you receive shoes as gifts, because you might already have enough.
- If you are not sure about their size. It is better to measure and buy one pair first.
When it is a good idea to buy more
- If you go out a lot and the footwear wears out quickly.
- If you have events coming up (christening, birthdays, family parties).
- If your climate changes a lot throughout the day or the year.
How to avoid useless purchases
- Measure first. Buy based on foot measurement, not age. In our Size Guide, we explain how.
- Buy with real use in mind. If they hardly go out, they don't need five pairs.
- Choose colors that go with everything. This way, each pair gets more use.
- Check the size often. You can see how to do it in how to tell if your baby's shoes are already too small.
Quality over quantity
Two comfortable pairs with a flexible sole and a good fit are worth more than six that are uncomfortable. If you want to see options, you can check out our little shoes, little boots, and all our models.
