How to know if your baby's shoes are too small
Compartir
One day their shoes fit perfectly, and suddenly, they start to bother them. Since babies' feet grow so fast, it is normal not to notice when it is time to change sizes. And because your baby cannot tell you "they're too tight," you have to look for the signs.
Here are the clearest signs that their shoes are now too small and how to check it at home in a minute.
The 8 signs that they need a bigger size
1. Their toes touch the tip of the shoe
This is the most important sign. There should be a small space, between half a centimeter and a centimeter, between their longest toe and the tip of the shoe. If there is no space, they are already too small.
2. They leave red marks after taking them off
If you see red marks on the sides, the instep, or the toes when taking off their shoes, they are likely too tight.
3. They take them off all the time
A baby who used to tolerate them and suddenly rejects them might be feeling discomfort. If you want to see other reasons why this happens, we explain it in why does my baby take off their shoes?
4. It is hard to get their foot in
If it suddenly takes more effort to put the shoes on, or you have to push their foot to get it inside, the size is likely no longer correct.
5. They walk differently or trip more often
If your baby changes how they walk or trips more than usual, check their footwear. A tight shoe can make it uncomfortable for them to move.
6. Their toes look crowded or overlapping
When taking the shoe off, check if their toes look squashed or have marks on them.
7. The shoe looks deformed
If the front part looks bulging or the material is stretched out where their toes rest, it is a clue that the foot is already occupying all the space.
8. They complain or cry when putting them on
If your baby cries or gets upset when you put their shoes on and this didn't happen before, it is worth checking the size.
How to check it at home in 3 steps
- Measure their foot. Place their little foot on a sheet of paper, with the heel against the wall, mark the tip of the longest toe, and measure the distance in centimeters.
- Compare with the shoe's internal measurement. You can measure the insole (or the interior length). It should be 0.5 to 1 cm longer than their foot.
- Check the shoe while worn. With them standing, gently press the tip: you should feel a small space, not their toe pressed against it.
If you need a more complete step-by-step guide, we explain it in how to choose your baby's shoe size, and you can find the reference chart in our Size Guide.
How often to check the size
In the first few years, a good habit is to check the size every 2 or 3 months and always before buying a new pair. This prevents them from wearing shoes that no longer fit.
What to do if they have already outgrown them
- Stop using them for long outings until you change sizes.
- Measure their foot again and choose the corresponding size.
- If the pair is in good condition, you can keep it as a keepsake or give it to another baby.
When to consult the pediatrician?
If you notice blisters, redness that doesn't go away, pain, or anything out of the ordinary on their feet or in the way they walk, it is best to consult your pediatrician.
